Q: Do you recommend using GTM for improving site performance? Is there any way to estimate by how much site performance would improve?
A: Yes! GTM is good for site performance when you are moving 3rd party tags from your codebase to GTM to load async and rely on the dataLayer vs having multiple tags doing the same liquid logic to complete their data needs.
You can benchmark by doing before/after site speed testing if you move to GTM (i.e. test the site now then test after making the changes). webpagetest.org is a good one to use.
Q: For Non-plus stores, will conversions setup through your plugin still register?
A: Yes! Transactions will still work as normal if you are not on a plus store. The only thing we don't recommend for non-plus stores is configuring GA through GTM since we don't have access to the checkout (pre-purchase) pages.
Q: We have a partial installation of Analytics/Adwords on our site, as well as the GTM tag on our pages. Do we need to uninstall this before using GTM Suite, or will it understand what is already in place?
A: Yes, you will need to remove any partially implemented scripts to prevent duplicates from firing.
Q: How do I apply GTM to other themes for when I wish to switch themes?
A: The process for installing on a new theme is quick and easy: In the app settings if you click "Save and Update" on the GTM container ID then this will inject the Elevar snippets into the theme automatically. Q: When implementing GTM App with my Non-Plus Shopify Store, do I need to change anything to the GA code in the theme?
A: You will want to keep GA configured in Shopify for normal tracking. GTM can be setup for your AdWords, dataLayer, and other marketing scripts. But in this case it is best to keep GA setup in Shopify.
Q: Does the GTM Suite also work with dynamic remarketing tags from Google
A: Yes! It automates the process of creating retail parameters and we provide the GTM tags required to push this into AdWords. See more information here: Configure AdWords Remarketing Tag
Q: Can I use GTM with your App on checkout page (purchase event) if I don't have Shopify plus?
A: Yes! You can use our app and dataLayer on the thank you page (purchase event) for Non-Plus stores. This guide walks through the full setup: How to Implement GTM App with Your Non-Plus Shopify Store (Complete Guide)
Q: When I push the GTM container live in Shopify Plus, does that cancel out the hard coded versions of Google Analytics and Facebook?
A: Once the GTM and FB tags are live in GTM you will want to remove the native GA and FB tags from the Shopify admin. You will also want to be sure you have a referral exclusion setup with your domain in GA to prevent cross-domain tracking referral issues. Let us know if you see any issues with this after going live!
Q: Is the GTM App only for Shopify Plus?
A: Nope! This will work for all Shopify stores. The only difference with Plus is that we don't recommend migrating Google Analytics tracking full time to GTM since we don't have access to checkout. Otherwise everything else works the same.
Q: Should I stop using the native integration under store --> preferences for both GA and FB Pixel?
A: Unless you are experiencing issues with your FB pixel today I would leave it setup with Shopify and keep them paused inside of GTM.
Q: How do I add custom tags such as Bing
A: Bing GTM container you can use to import is here.
Q: I am seeing a white screen when trying to access the GTM Suite app
A: Try logging in and viewing in an incognito window, or clear your cache. Let us know if you are still having trouble after doing these two things!
Q: I would like to disable Facebook from GTM, and keep it the Facebook/Shopify integration.
A: All you have to do is "pause" the FB tags in GTM (or delete) and re-enable within Shopify admin.
Q: We have implemented all the tags but we did not get sales performance in GA eCommerce conversion
A: Please check that you implemented the thank you page script in the checkout settings within Shopify admin.
Q: I'm getting the following error message when I go into AdWords:
error: Your Google Ads tag hasn't been active in the last 24 hours. Your tag hasn't been adding website visitors to your audience lists.
A: Check two things:
- You imported the GTM container for non-plus stores & updated variables, etc (as outlined here)
- You published your GTM container

Q: 90% of my products were missing 'Product id'
A: We get this question a lot from people who are using, and not using, our GTM app. In terms of the Item ID error, our understanding it that there is not currently a way to disable this setting on your AdWords tag once you've enabled it. So you could potentially have these errors persist (you don't need Item ID AND Product ID - they are meant for the same thing).
The best next step is to compare your 1 day, 7 day, 30 day ecomm_prodid event hits shown in AdWords to your product pageviews in Google Analytics. If these are within ~ 10-15% of one another then we feel it's safe to assume this tag is firing properly.
